After watching an old Law & Order SVU episode about the sale of human organs, I just wondered what other people thought. I guess I’m pretty liberal about medical issues (of course, with strings attached). I feel like the practice of organ sale shouldn’t be outlawed. With the right procedures in tact, it would greatly help the thousands of people in need of kidney, liver, and lung transplants, all of which can come from live donors. It would also greatly reduce the black market organ sales, which facilitate poor operating conditions in hotel rooms and the like and increase the likelihood of infection and death.
The argument for why it’s okay to sell sperm and your eggs is that you can make more. But you only need one kidney to live, liver lobes regenerate, and you can donate partial lung lobes. So why should someone die when a few bucks is incentive enough to get strangers to help out other strangers?
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. But can you really fault someone for trying to save a loved one by buying someone’s kidney? Then again, I also believe in euthanasia as well, which is a different story entirely (but, we’re “humane” enough to put our animals down when they’re suffering, why should someone be forced to live in agony when there’s no hope of recovery?)
Anyway, just my thoughts.
